Filming Dónde Estás (Amy Winehouse Valerie Cumbia Version) was a great experience for learning how to be resourceful, self reliant, and how to use ingenuity in a time of isolation, and lack of resources. I heard Dónde Estás completely by accident as I was scrolling through my hard drives on one of my “trying to be productive” days in quarantine at the beginning of the pandemic. I had completely forgotten about this song I translated, but instantly felt I had to do something with it upon listening. I’m so glad I did! Dónde Estás has been my most streamed song to date and the most popular video on my YouTube video with the highest engagement! Thankfully I did this without anyone else and was able to keep all costs down below my meager budget! Here are 5 ways I was able to film a music video for under $300!
- Film a Video Using A Green Screen: This alleviates location issues which can potentially bring about licensing costs as well as driving, on location set props to carry back and forth, and providing for the possibility of a crew. Green screen keeps everything in a studio location with minimal to no props needed, and allows for the director, producer, and editor to add whatever digital backdrop is needed. It’s a fabulous alternative!
- Provide Own Hair and Make up: This is a great plus since you’re killing two birds with one stone and knocking out the cost for hair as well as make up, which can run quite a bit depending on who you hire. Do your homework to make sure you can create the look you’re going for! This saves at least $300 on the budget alone!
- Be Your Own Stylist: Decide early on what look/style you’d like to portray, and find those pieces within your own wardrobe, or (okay, truth be told, I went to Target), you can go to a retail store, and be extremely careful with your handling of the merch, then return it as soon as your shoot is finished. (DO NOT REMOVE TAGS!) Cleverly hide them! I had nothing to wear since I had gone to San Antonio hoping to only be there for a week. Well, a week lasted three mos, so my clothes only stretched so far (as well as my waistline! Those TX tacos were GOOD!)
- Minimal Shoot Time: Make sure to allocate the most minimal amount of time possible to the shoot. If your videographer/director charges a day rate that you can work with, awesome! However, if they’re charging by the hour (like mine since it was a deal) I wanted to shoot the video within three hours. That meant being really fast on my feet with hairstyles, make up, wardrobe, etc… I literally was changing as fast as I could in the bathroom with bobbypins in my mouth, one heel on my foot, and the other hand trying to pull up pants, etc… It was fast, to the point, and effective. Once again, know more less what you’re shooting for since you’re essentially the director, and the videographer is there to shoot and beautifully edit.
- Keep Edits Down to Two Max: Knowing that you can’t be too meticulous in edits will definitely alleviate any overhead or unexpected costs once filming wraps. Knowing what scenes you want as well as lighting, and where you want to be staged within the frame, will greatly help minimize the editing process, since all these concerns will be addressed during the shoot. Look at the takes as they’re being filmed to make sure it’s what you want the first time (while shooting). editing and color correction will only make what you already like look even better, so if you’re happy with it during the shoot, odds are you’ll love the final
